 CD RELEASE -12th November 2021

Niels Rønsholdt

ARCHIVE of EMOTIONS and EXPERIENCES

Book 1

piano:Lenio Liatsou

On 12 November, my world premiere recording of Niels Rønsholdt's fascinating and mysterious work for solo piano Archive of Emotions and Experiences, Book 1: Birds will be released.

"When a blackbird sings in the springtime, or we hear a nightingale in the evening, we perceive the sound in relation to an enormous arsenal of emotion and collective memories", says composer Niels Rønsholdt.

His solo piano work Archive of Emotions and Experiences, Book 1: Birds is staged in an imagined future in which the birds have long since died out. As an oracle-like figure she sits in a semi-transparent blue cubic. She communicates with us through her instrument and tells of human emotions and experiences before it is too late and they are gone.

The work examines the connection between nature and culture, and leaves the listener with the question of what consequences our lives have for nature, the climate and for the other living creatures on the earth.

Flickering bird song

Archive of Emotions and Experiences is a solo piano work consisting of 13 small single movements, in which the references to bird song are audible in the almost flickering music. Simple and singing melodies are set to run at an extreme speed, so that the whole thing takes place at a furiously high tempo. The new music magazine Seismograf described in their review of the first performance of the work "a melancholic, tonal melody splintered to atoms".

The music sounds mysterious and its style difficult to decipher, but at the same time one can hear associations to the Romantic piano music. A pseudo-romantic music which is still distinctively Rønsholdt's.

Gripping contribution to the solo piano repertoire

The new album is a fascinating contribution to the solo piano repertoire and offers a great insight to Niels Rønsholdt's unique musical thinking. Rønsholdt often works with conceptual compositions and references to musical periods and genres that is not really "his own", for example the Romantic piano music.

The work is written for and recorded by the Greek pianist Lenio Liatsou, who is specialized in the contemporary repertoire and new music. She has appeared in prominent new music festivals and venues, such as Carnegie Hall, Darmstadt, the Munich Biennale and the Danish Spor and Klang Festival. Liatsou gave the first performance of the work on Klang Festival 2019.

OPEN CALL FOR PIANO WORKS

CONTEMPUS (Pedagogical Guide for teaching contemporary piano music) is a project funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation. Its goal is to create an essential tool for teaching contemporary piano music and it is run by an artistic team of pianists and composers.

CONTEMPUS is inviting composers from all over the world to compose solo piano pieces that contain pedagogical elements of contemporary piano music. The selected pieces will be performed and recorded in a number of venues in Greece. The scores and recordings will be accessible through the CONTEMPUS digital platform.

Although intended for beginner, intermediate and advanced level players, the pieces should remain faithful to the composer’s musical language and aesthetic.

The project’s artistic team will produce a Teacher’s Guide to accompany each selected piece, to give guidance and insight on the teaching/performing of the piece, including any new musical/technical elements and learning points it provides to the performer.

The pieces will be performed and recorded by the pianists Lenio Liatsou (www.lenioliatsou.com) and Marina Vlachaki.

The project will select approximately 20 composers, who will receive a fee for their piece - ranging from 310€ to 465€.

Guidelines

—Eligibility: The Call is open to composers of any nationality and age.

—Each composer may submit up to two scores.

—All pieces must be written for this call or not be older than three years and should not have been performed publicly, copied, distributed, or made accessible on the internet.

—Duration: The piece (which can also be a group of smaller pieces or movements) is expected to have a total length of 1-6 minutes.

— Score requirements: for one piano (for one or more than one pianist) and can include extended techniques and/or prepared piano.

—It is important that the pieces have both artistic and pedagogical qualities.

How to submit:

Submissions are accepted via e-mail only to: contempuspiano@gmail.com

Please label the subject of the e-mail as: CONTEMPUS Call for scores - Last Name, First Name
